What happened in:

Most people manage to train their own pets to ignore their flock (some take to the other extreme like my neighbour's Lhasa Apso who shares duties with the mother hen, like a hairy au pair), but other people's dogs are another matter. The danger to poultry from foxes is well-trumpeted, but your hens' main predators are more likely to be uncontrolled dogs.

My friend and Orpington breeder Pauline was welcomed home by her tearful daughter to the shocking news that her entire breeding flock, built up over years of selection, care and affection, had been massacred by two local dogs. Those that hadn't been torn to pieces had died of shock.

So, here's a plea to owners of straying dogs - control your animals, but to henkeepers to make good your boundaries and protect your flock. Check the smallholding and poultry press for the latest in electric and traditional fencing.

Here's hoping that you all have a carefree and peaceful Christmas, and if you are in this area The Kitchen Garden's Christmas Shopping Days are from November 26th til December 5th (10am til 5pm). Please drop in.
