I can see them now from my window, all scratching and pecking busily in their broody house and run, learning from their mother and settling to keep warm under her feathers from the still cold winds. I'm offering Allen and Pages' chick crumbs and all the mother would eat normally - mashed and cut up small - she will have to eat baby food for a while, like all new mums. Their water is in a shallow dish with an upturned flowerpot in it to minimise the danger of the chicks getting in and chilling from a cold bath. Otherwise I leave them to it - their mum is instinctively protective and sensible. |
