January has thrown every sort of weather at us, so the first sunny day finds me worthily spring cleaning the chicken run.  Inside the houses are not too bad because day by day I've removed the top pages of their newspaper bedding.

During the snowstorms the flock stayed inside, but later they sheltered under the verandah staring morosely at the snowflakes.  Your hens will appreciate a similar shelter - at least a few strategically balanced hay bales.

I've swept the henhouses with the dustpan and brush kept in the run, finished the job with a wallpaper scraper for those stubborn bits and the nest boxes have been filled with fresh straw for the sole layer - the black bantam.  The drinkers have been scrubbed with the washing up brush kept especially by the outside tap (though an old plastic basin is easier to free of frozen contents).

Feeling self-congratulatory, I'm typing this to put off the evil moment when I should do similar housework here in the cottage.
