Out of the five eggs I set this Spring I have one pretty pullet and four handsome cockerels.  Apparently its a bad year for most breeders who would obviously prefer mostly hens.

My flock needs a new consort so I have earmarked a likely candidate whose main appeal so far is his friendliness to me (not an entirely essential feature for the hens, but hard for me to resist).  It is important that he can hold his own with his ladies (many of them generations his senior) otherwise he'll be henpecked.  So he spends a lot of time in the kitchen away from the bullying larger birds, from where I'm sure he'll eventually emerge an intelligent and caring rooster.

The loosing combatants in this particular talent contest - good-looking specimens all - have homes to go to and spend their remaining time here patrolling the outer reaches of the garden.  Those joining immature pullets can go soon but if you are introducing a young cock to older hens, best wait till he is mature and can rule the roost.
