In April my three year old Orpington went broody and sat on a few eggs (see also June 2002). See sat tight until three days before they were due to hatch, she was bullied off her clutch by the little black bantam - mother of the flock, duly hatching one chick who subsequently proved to be a cockerel.

A month later the frustrated Orpington disappeared - obviously laying away. I caught glimpses of her, sneakily eating the duck food, tried to follow her and eventually found her nest under a rickety plant stand that was in danger of crushing her if moved. So I left her in the lap of the gods.

A week ago she emerged with nine little fluffy eggs on legs and all are doing well, disproving my theory that Opingtons make clumsy mums. Watch this space, or visit the Kitchen Garden during July. We are closed in August and hold our final henkeeping course on September 10th.
