A busy month at the Kitchen Garden – as it is for most henkeepers and gardeners. The Hen Party was great fun, despite the foul weather. About a dozen breeders attended with thirty different breeds, including some fabulous turkeys. 1000 or so visitors raised a goodly sum for the Church Restoration Fund. Our henkeeping courses are proving popular with only a few spaces left on the September Counting Your Chickens.

Here’s hoping for a better hen to cockerel ratio this season. So far my Orpington has hatched a few chicks and another is raising Araucanas for a friend. It’s amazing to see the pretty colours – lavender and partridge and their tiny bright eyes. Very different to their large round blond cousins.

Two new books – A Peacock on the Lawn – beautifully illustrated advice on raising peafowl by Sue Carpenter and the Henkeeper’s Journal, a revamp of an old favourite with lots of practical advice and spaces for you to add your own observations.

Hoping to meet you here at the Kitchen Garden this summer. We are open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 till 5, until the end of September.
