The winds and gales have brought down leaves, branches and whole trees, and the chicken run is full of fallen apples. Watching my flock through the French windows of my study, I can see they fussily eat only the pips. The ducks like to wait until they form a kind of apple puree and then they gobble up the fermented mash and behave like drunken football fans. Your hens need extra protein now that they're growing their winter coats. Treats like grated cheese, peanuts, sunflower seed hearts and bird seed will help them to produce the thick duvet overcoat to see them through the next few months. Poultry Spice (see Catalogue) is a tried and tested food supplement which will offer extra calcium, iron and vitamins and can be added to moistened wholemeal bread for a sustaining hot breakfast.
