Now the summer holidays are over, it's time to take stock at the Kitchen Garden. And we certainly do have stock. Our brood of nine Orpington chicks have all survived, thanks to the expert ministrations of mum and surprise surprise.... the Cockerel previously known as Rapist, now a new man.

We have been bearing witness to Victorian nursery book scenes of farmyard idylls with cock, hen and chicks happily scratching in the meadow. They have been so good, it has been heart warming.

But inevitably there is a downside, guess how many are taking after their dad. Would you believe, six are cockerels and just three are pullets.

So if any one can give a really good freerange home with at least six wives to a beautiful Orpington cockerel of impeccable pedigree and all the right instincts, please do send me an email at francine@jfraymond.demon.co.uk
